The Story of Olora

I will NOT fight them

She trudged slowly, the echo of her boots colliding with the path beneath her feet ringing in her ears. Her face was expressionless but for the glimmer of disappointment darkening her emerald eyes, only a slight indication of the discouragement she suffered. The stillness of her environment was a momentary comfort, a drastic change from what seemed just a few short moments ago. Slowing her pace, her gaze fell from the road, turning instead to the surrounding woods. Observing two squirrels, hastily bounding from limb to limb, a light smile crept upon her lips. The simple frantic activity of the two animals amused her, nature one of her favorite pleasures. Memories of the recent battle began to drain from her thoughts as she stopped to enjoy the jovial hunt for acorns occurring before her.

The sound of boisterous speech approaching from the east abruptly halted her relaxation. Not wanting to face those she fought alongside quite yet, she scoured the area, looking for a sturdy branch among the trees. Detecting one that met her approval, she quickly scaled it, perching herself among the leaves, hidden from view. She chuckled as she watched the throng returning from the front line, pleased that she went unnoticed. Adjusting her position slightly, she leaned back against the ample trunk, and closed her eyes.

Her thoughts still hazy, the side effect of the prolonged snooze she had allowed herself, she stood before a market vendor, attempting to decide on a purchase. She cringed as she felt a rough hand grasp her right shoulder, and reluctantly turned to face the Bahmi who stood next to her, while deftly wrestling her limb from his grasp.

“What can I do for you, friend?” She questioned calmly, hoping to avoid a ruckus. The tall warrior sneered, leaning in to respond.

“What can you do? Well, considering your actions, or should I say lack thereof, outside the Refuge this morning, I highly doubt that you would do so much as lift a finger to assist me in any way. What were you doing out there if you had no intention of fighting? Did you come to pick blossoms while the Guardians attempted to annihilate us? What is wrong with you?”

Rage flooding her eyes, she snarled a reply. “Nothing? You think I did nothing out there? True, I did not fight them but I kept you alive. If you focused more on developing your mind as opposed to your biceps you might realize the value of a healer.

The Bahmi spat on the ground, the look of disdain deepening on his tanned face. “Those who do not fight Guardians are cowards, and nothing more. We do not need traitors like you assisting us at the warfront. We need those who actually understand the duties of being Ascended.”

Olora shook her head, fully aware that reason would not win this day. Attempting to explain herself, she responded with a fierceness that provoked glances from those in the vicinity. “I did not ask to be Ascended. I did not want to be Ascended. This fate was thrust upon me, not chosen. But as I have been brought back, I will perform my duty in attempting to prevent the armies of Regulos from destroying Telara. But I will NOT fight them. Do you hear me, Bahmi? I will NOT fight the Guardians. If we want to win the war, the TRUE war which we all need to fight, we will battle alongside the Guardians, not opposing them. It is the only way. I maintain hope that someday, those in power will realize this. Until then, I heal, and I battle – MY way.”
