I am totally clueless here.  Have a 2000 navigator that local mechanic is saying wants a rack and pinion kit, carrier bearing race, carrier bearing, limited slip carrier and rear differential kit...basically everything inside the rear differential clutches spider gear set 10 or full assembly r then r6.  My husband is also totally out of his water on this.  Anyone have some advice?

2000 Lincoln Navigator. So the rack and pinion kit are what turn your tires when you turn the steering wheel. The differental takes the spinning motion of the drive shaft and sends it to the tires. Inside there are gears that make this possible. Do you want to spend over $2500.00 U.S. on a 18 year old vehicle? To get it back up running and have something else go wrong. If the steering and differental are shot then the transmission and ball joints are not far behind. How many miles on the Navigator? If over 150k consider looking for a newer used car. This one is going to nickle and dime you to death. If the milage is under 100k then the repairs should get you back on the road provided everything else checks out.

I will ditto what El is saying having had my own experience with old cars through the years. What I've always done was determine the cost per month it averages out to keep the car going and then see if a newer used one that is certified isn't much more. In most cases if I was already spending enough to average to 150 to 200 a month over a year I started shopping. If I had issues like you have, I really went shopping. There are plenty of much newer cars out there that you can get for less than 300 a month for a good certified used vehicle that could last you another decade or more depending on what you get and how old it already is. If you need a bigger vehicle, it will cost more, of course. But you are looking at a good 2500 dollars and probably already have damage to other things like El said, so that is already 200+ a month if it lasts a year.

We need this vehicle to last til the end of the year.  Found a local guy that is swapping out the entire assembly with one from salvage w a small warranty.  This is my husbands vehicle but he works from home  and it will not generally see more than 2-300 miles a month.  I think we could manage with just mine which is new but he wants his own wheels  Many thanks for your advice.  this puppy will be replaced very soon

Yeah, so many things to think on with vehicles. At least you found an option that will work for this year. :)
