sPvP is fast-paced, and really character-skill based. The maps are all capture-the-node, like Rift's Codex or WoW's Arathi Basin. There's a map with an underwater node, a map with a trebuchet, a little variety.
sPvP you need to play with your team, but you'll often have 1v1 2v2 2v3 sort of matchups. Deploy your skills and counter the other. Really helps to know your profession well, and be quick and skilled.
Whereas I see WvW as more group-based.
There's some parts of sPvP that I wish were different -- often I'll enter a game and be the only person on my side, or only one teammate on maps that are built for 8v8. Also there's notable lack of balance between professions.
One sort of weird thing is whatever you do in sPvP stays in sPvP. You rank up, can get new gear and whatnot, but it's only for sPvP. Whereas WvW gets you fame and fortune and everything that goes with it which you can take with you when you leave.
Edit-let me give an example --
Say I'm on an elementalist. I have attacks that do a lot of damage, but take a bit of time to land, say the Dragon Tooth fire scepter attack #2. In PvE, you can cast it, cuz mobs never dodge. In WvW, you can just cast it, cuz the player you're attacking prob'ly can't even see you. In sPvP, if I want to land that attack, I need to immobilize or knock down (say Earth 4, or my immobilize utility) before casting it, else it misses every time.
