Tech Question: Finding the Bottleneck

Hello family,

I generally enjoy good performance on my rig. Like most though, when things get hot and heavy in conquest or wvwvw, my framerate drops.  I'm looking to understand the cause.  I suspect a bottleneck somewhere, but don't know where that is. I'm asking primarily to sate my curiosity and to expand my knowledge for future upgrades.  If any tech-savvy family member would like to help me understand my system performance monitor outputs and thus identify my bottleneck, I would be appreciative!

If you have data, I'll help you take a look at it. We'll need the specs on your rig as well, in as much detail as you can get. Something to keep in mind, however, is that there is a point of diminishing returns in system performance. Only you (or more to the point, your bank account) can decide where that is.

Many thanks Arowefell. I will send you a dxdiag file and a spreadsheet showing cpu and gpu usage in a wvw fight if there is an email address I can contact you at. It doesn't look like we can send attachments in this interface. Cheers, Skade

You can list all your parts in detail (make, model) I can gladly look at it. Your current game settings will help. Your ISP would be helpful.

Rather than sending it directly to me, you should post your data where others can get to it too. There are quite a few system tuners around, and they'll likely have as much good input as I will.

Thank you all. Below is my system information. I'll post my system usage data in a separate post in order to keep it from getting lost! Anyone have advice on how to present the system usage data here? I'm using AMD system usage monitor and it reports usage across all cores and each gpu in an excel spreadsheet. Not sure how to import that here. Many thanks to all responders! Before I get into the technical details, let me say that it's possible you're limited by nothing more than the game engine itself - it can only render so many bodies on the screen at one time. I know that some folks said they were able to see more people and more detail during Rall's memorial service by going into the game settings, selecting the graphics/display tab, and sliding the performance slider all the way to "Best Performance". This may let you see more mobs and render frames faster, but of course you'll be losing some pretty. IF the engine is its own bottleneck (and if it's your only bottleneck, which is not the case), then all the horses in the world won't make that faster. Now on to the technical stuff. So it looks like you have... Intel i7 980 w/12 cores 12gb RAM 2x AMD 69XX cards (crossfired?) Killer Gaming/Network adapter Not sure about HDD data You've got a pretty good haas of a system there! Judging by the i7 980 and 69XX cards, I'd say it's probably 2+ years old. That's not ancient in computer terms, but it is starting to get up in months. I'll go piece by piece... Note - my comments are strictly focused on performance and do not reflect any data on power consumption IN THE LEAST, save for what ever power consumption stats may or may not be taken into account by Passmark's benchmarking tool. CPU - The i7 980 is one of the best performing chips that ran on the socket LGA 1366. You could potentially go to a Xeon processor, but I don't know that you'll see a huge increase in performance for the cost, especially since you'll still be limited to an older generation processor (still fast, but performance increase per dollar spent has a relatively low ceiling). Your processor is a heavy hitter. RAM - In quantity, you have plenty. As a side note, your page file also looks sufficiently and appropriately sized (depending on who you ask...there's some debate about this, but in general I'd say leave it alone unless you know what you're doing and you have a good reason for doing it). In quality, it could be a little slow. There are no memory speed stats posted so it's difficult to tell. I know that the CAS latency on the memory I used for my rig a couple years ago was 9, and the vast majority of 240-pin RAM is still produced with those same settings. You could swap out your memory for that w/CAS latencies of 8-8-8 or 7-7-7 for relatively low dough, but I have no idea what kind of performance increase this would yield (here's some G.Skill RAM on New Egg at 7-7-7-21 timings for low dough...no idea about the quality of this specific part, though http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231402) Video Cards - Your DxDiag listed two AMD 6900 series cards in it. I don't know if this means there are two physical cards in the box or not. If there's only one, that is going to be the biggest area for upgrade right now. If there's two, then you can still upgrade cards and get a fairly significant performance boost, but you'll be paying twice as much. Just for discussion's sake, I'm going to assume you have 6950's in your system. Upgrading to two 7950's will run you $640 or more, plus shipping and/or tax. By benchmark score, you'ld be looking at a 20-30% increase in performance. Who knows what that translates into as far as real GW2 playing performance. What I do know is that for that cost, you're already halfway to a new gaming rig. Nonetheless, this is likely to be your easiest and most obvious area for upgrade. The 7900 series cards are pretty damn good. As a side note, I'm not sure if GW2 supports Crossfire/SLI builds. If it doesn't, I'm not sure that two cards would be any better than one. Network card - I'm not going to say much about this, lest I start a flame war. Some people swear by Killer network cards. Some people laugh at them. I have no empirical or anecdotal data to offer on the topic. The only thing I will say is the network card you use is not likely coming into play. Hard Disk - I didn't notice any details as to what type of disk you have in your rig - traditional vs. solid state. It looks like you might have a RAID 0 array (I'm not an expert at DxDiag stats so I'm not sure if the ARRAY0 is indicating a RAID 0 array or not). If you do, that's a disk array that's built for performance, so good for you! But I digress. Traditional spinning disks used in most PCs generally have slower read speeds than current generation solid state disks. You could get some performance increase by switching to SSD, however you're likely to see this performance increase in the form of shortened loading screen times. If I understand correctly, GW2 will try to load all the art assets into memory when moving into a new zone. If that's the case, then you will experience a limited performance - no real FPS increase in WvW, and no WvW performance increase in general unless you're frequently jumping zones (which I don't know if you can even do that since I don't WvW yet). Cheers! Psypher

Many thanks Psypher (and Kalec who is responding via mail). I've gotten some great info so far. Psypher, with regards to the AMD 6990, it has two GPU's on the card. They are integrated such that they do not require or benefit from Crossfire mode (according to amd). I'm not sure what the equivalent in single GPU cards is, but I remember the representative telling me it was either similar to two 6950's or two 6970's. I have two hard disks at 7200 rpm on a RAID 0 Array. My power supply is 875W. I actually bought the computer direct from Dell in August of 2011, I believe all of the 6900's were out by that point, but 6990 was new to the scene. I actually don't believe AMD has come out with its successor yet, the 7990. This is primarily a learning excersize for me. This was my first computer, and though I tried to make an informed purchase, you can never replace experience. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of this rig, with what doesn't seem to have been to much frustration. I'm hoping to actually get another couple of years out of it, I'm sure with new games I'll have to ratchet the graphics down, but if I can keep the visuals near to what I experience now, I'm a happy camper. At the end of those two years, I'll have to decide to upgrade or simply buy a new rig. Whichever way I go, I appreciate all the help in making me better informed. Please don't hesitate to add more info or opinion if you have it! Skade

Try running Furmark benchmark (1080 mode). That's mainly a GPU benchmark. Also 3dMark Vantage Pixel fill test, that tests GPU memory bandwidth (which I somewhat suspect may be the issue.)

Yeah, you've got a workhorse of a system there. You should be gaming on it for at least another couple of years before you need to do much upgrading. Judging by the size of your HDD, and your "bought it from Dell" comment, you've got a single disk drive. If it's a stock drive, it's probably spinning at 5400 rpm. This is kinda bad, and would definitely explain your frame rate issues in WvW. When two zergs meet each other on the battlefield, your machine has to retrieve all the textures for all the players on the other team. Those textures are, more than likely, sitting in the page file on disk, because the game has no way of knowing in advance that you're going to see those other players, and so it cannot proactively page that information into memory. In the interest of learning, here's what happens. You run up to a keep with 60+ enemy players in it. Your computer does the following: 1. The GPU wants to render and display the textures of the enemy players. It fires a bunch of requests to the CPU for the texture data. 2. The CPU goes to the memory controller to find the texture data in memory. It does this a whole bunch of times. 3. The memory controller looks in memory, but doesn't find the texture data. It responds to all the CPU's requests with "page fault", which is it's way of saying "hang on, let me find it". 4. The memory controller start searching through the page file. The page file is on the disk, and the disk is super slow (no matter how good your hard drive is, it's always super slow...good drives are just less super slow). 5. Eventually, the memory controller will find the texture data and load it into active memory. It fires an interrupt at the CPU to let it know the good news. 6. The CPU pumps the texture data to the GPU. 7. The GPU does what GPUs do, and you get to see your enemies die in a hail of your attacks. Now, if your hard drive is slow, the whole process gets held up waiting for the memory controller to find the textures. Really, this happens no matter what (hard drives are REALLY slow), but with a good disk setup, it can be fast enough that your slow human eyes don't notice the wait. Realistically, with your rig, the hard disk is always going to be your bottle neck with games. You *could* spend thousands of dollars and build up a RAID 5 array of the best solid state drives on the consumer market. This would push drive access times down to almost memory speeds, and you'd effectively have hundreds of gigabytes of persistent RAM, and the most awesome gaming rig ever. Or, you could make a reasonable upgrade to your current drive. Drive upgrade options generally come in 2 flavors: more speed and more drives. More speed is pretty obvious - faster spin rate (with a good cache and and controller) means faster data retrieval. Faster drives are, obviously, more expensive, potentially a lot more. More drives involves building a RAID array, which allows multiple cheaper drives to operate in parallel. RAID arrays offer a pretty good performance increase for the first few drives, but past 4 or so, you start to get into diminishing returns. Personally, I have a couple of decent 7200 rpm drives in RAID 0, and I have no problems. It's up to you to decide which direction, if any, you want to go. Regarding network cards: I know some people swear by the cool, expensive cards, but there's really no data to back them up. MMOs use very little bandwidth, so any networking bottle neck you have is on your transport (wired vs wireless), your router, and your ISP. I monitor my network use, and with GW2 WvW and RaidCall both going nuts, I've gotten up to a whopping 4% network utilization. You could literally play this game on 56k dial up. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

I would go with the HD being the bottleneck as a likely scenario. You can validate it with a few tests like those mentioned by SAI to help point in the right direction. On my current system I have a Raptor 10k rpm HD and still run into lag on large events. A SSD is my next planned upgrade as the IO far exceeds a spinning HD if you get the right one, they aren't all made equal like many other things. If you plan to go down that path look for some SSD benchmark/review sites, their speed ranges from mfg to mfg from just above a normal HD to several times faster. I do like Arowefell's idea of a Raid 5 full of SSD's, but thats quite expensive!

That's a very nice system. If I had that and wanted to upgrade my first step would be buying a 120 GB or larger SSD. Put Windows and GW2 on that. Use your current drives for every other program and storage. If you're not actually looking to make any purchases and are hoping to get rid of your frame rate issues I'd suggest making sure you have the latest drivers for all your hardware. In particular the video, sound, and network drivers. Most people do experience some frame rate issues in heavy WvW. How serious is the issue? What exactly do you experience when it's happening?

Hi all! Just wanted to clarify that I do have two 500g, 7200 rpm hard drives set up on a RAID 0 Array. In response to Kalizaar, I did a little framerate monitoring during wvw. My framerate drop is not at all bad. I did not go below 45 in my most recent bout. I am mainly just curious as to what causes the drop as I wish to understand more about my rig and how the various components come together to bring about the games I love. An interesting note, 45 fps looks much different on GW2 than say Rift or SWTOR which I actually purposefully limit to 45 in order to keep my system cooler (the 6990 sounds like a jet engine and runs hotter than my girlfriends bayou gumbo). Specifically, I notice the "chop" at 45 more on GW2 than I do the other games. I wonder why this would be?

Your 6990 can be fixed to keep cooler. It is an investment, Accelero Twin Turbo 6990. All heat will exhaust inside case, but at a lower temps. This will take up 3 slots due to the size. Uses dual 120mm fans on it. But temps will be much lower 15-25c less and much quieter. The site does say $150, but you can look around and find it for cheaper at about $110 http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/cooling/vga/449/accelero-twin-turbo-6990.html?c=2182 I use similar kind on my GTX670, quiet and cool all the time. HDD in raid is nice. An SSD would be a nice upgrade to add there. 256GB Crucial M4 is priced very well at $180, best reliable. Speeds compared to others that are slightly faster, will never be noticed under normal usage. CPU/Ram is good. Not much more you can do, except over clock the system. That will mostly result in a few FPS higher, but help more in keeping the fps more steady. Be sure you have AMD CAP profile updated, as it helps with crossfire, which your 6990 has. Only other thing, is get rid of the killer nic and use a standard Intel PCI-e nic.

To be completely honest, if your current system isn't running GW2 well, it's a fault with the game itself rather than your computer. I understand your interest in finding out what is behind the numbers, but keep in mind that GW2 was just released, and I'm sure there is plenty more optimization to be done to both the client and the servers. Based on what I've seen so far, the most prominent issues are server/code based - optimizing or upgrading your system won't help with this. Also, buying a SSD probably isn't going to increase your gaming performance. You have lots of RAM and lots of memory on your video card, the performance boost you'd see in GW2 by adding a SSD would be negligible at best. Two 7200RPM drives in RAID0 are already very fast. SSD performance is most noticeable when you have multiple programs accessing many different files on the drive at the same time - this type of situation doesn't typically occur while gaming so long as you have a decent system (you do) and don't have a a bunch of other applications running in the background.

SSD would just help load zones a bit faster, not to mention boot times decreased considerably which is reason enough for me anyhow.. lol. Most likely wouldn't help with FPS though. I mean theoretically your system would be able to pull graphical assets off of the SSD into memory faster than from the RAID0, I just doubt it'd be a noticeable increase in FPS. A cheap SSD will in most cases trounce any but the most expensive RAID mechanical setups. Or for scary performance do SSDs in a RAID configuration! But this is just talking about general system performance and not game performance (besides faster loading of maps, and *possible* nearly unnoticeable increase in FPS). I'd say if you're at 45 FPS at the worst of times you're doing better than many people. The game is a DirectX 9 game and 32-bit on top of that so super awesome rigs just aren't taken advantage of as well. Like Kraas said I think you're bumping up against the game itself, not any deficiency in your system.

Hi all. Thank you for all the input! Apologies for late reply here. I've been busy out in the field. Fall is soo gorgeous in Mississippi...meaning its in the 70's and 80's...not 90's and 100's (F)! Some might be interested, or maybe dumbfounded to know that I have swapped my 6990 for a single 7970. I was able to trade the two out for essentially no extra cost to me. This could be viewed as a downgrade. Here is my reasoning, I was having to run some games (e.g., SWTOR, Skyrim) with one gpu disabled in windowed mode. I realized that I simply wasn't getting the power out of the card I should be. My research indicates that the 7970 is approximately 93% as powerful as the 6990. Therefore, if I'm running my 6990 at half power...the 7970 was the better way to go, all else being equal. As far as GW2 goes, performance appears to be equal between the two cards at the moment. One improvement I've noticed is that I had a lot of "flickering" in lighted areas with the 6990 in crossfire mode. This does not occur for me with the 7970. Cheers, Skade
