This is for those having problems in the early levels.  Mesmer is one of the more unique class designs, in that they are designed to dodge tank, not mitigate.  This means that no matter what "role" you want to play, you must learn to dodge and always be mobile as a Mesmer.  A Mesmer that stands still for too long, is a dead Mesmer, be it in PVE or WvWvW.

 1-35 build link

Sword/Sword
Staff

Take 10 in Chaos
Take 5 in Illusions
Take 10 in Inspiration

You can also take Dueling to 5 from 35-40, the vigor from crits really does help a lot, but since you do not get that Minor skill until 40, I didn't bother to include it in the build link.

Get the Utilities in the order that I present them.  For leveling in PvE there is not much reason to deviate, as a matter of fact, I still use those utilities for level 80 farming.  You'll later learn what different utilities to use in dungeons, fractals and WvW.

As I said above, you must learn to Dodge-roll, constantly.  You can not spank and tank with a Mesmer.  The trick to Mesmer in PvE is, the only way to get them focused on an illusion, is to always be moving and dodging.  Make sure you always have 3 illusions active.  Do not shatter them at this point, its more beneficial for all 3 to be active.  Shatter builds that you read about, are level 80 builds, not leveling builds.

THANKS A BUNCH! I hadn't even considered sword/sword but I use the staff all the time and then play around with combinations to switch to. I am only lvl 20 on the mezmer and I have trained sword and sword off-hand but never put the two together - not sure why, but I shall play around with this now - and I shall dodge more also :) Thanks again, I'm sure this is going to help.

you can also try what i run , i`ve been running it since lvl 30 and it is very fun , has high survibilty can solo 3 mobs at same time all 2 or 3 lvls above your lvl np. http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/2504-roaming-skrimsher basicly at 40 you would have 10 in dom for 15 % illusion damage and 10 in dueling for clone on dodge . basic rotation would be something like pistol 4, sword 3 sword 2 blind switch to staff , staff 2 , staff 5 staff 3 . normaly stuff is dead or really messed up by i get to staff 3 . once you get high enough lvl leaving clone illusions up etc is good due to buffs and effects they give by dying natural instead of shatter . only time i shatter a clone etc now is if i need to interrupt or i need to evade a attack and sword 2 is down or if the are low hp trying to heal etc and a quick shatter for burst or to add confusion is better . then letting them die otherwise . Also in WvW if you have clones out which look like you not a ghost has same wep etc jumping around all over just helps them know which to attack, sometimes not moving and looking like the rest of the clones can work as well . Ablities are easily switched out for soloing i tend to had defender phanstam, moa , decoy and feedback . if in a group etc i normaly run feedback, nullfield, portal/decoy and timewarp . i also swap out pistol for focus if in wvw .

Would those traits work for a G Sword build too? I tend to run G Sword / Staff and actually have good survival. Thanks!

Well, I was using GS before this post, and I can now testify that I actually sirvive better with Sek's setup than I did before with the great sword. The only thing I changed is when I know I am going to face multiple ranged defenders - and then I somestimes switch to focus so I can have the Warden - she helps a lot having her go after an archer of ax thrower - and she actually does decent damage at first. But I seem to kill a lot faster with the two swords and am quite happy with the Defender taking damage for me :) I just went through some story arcs that I have had trouble with on a couple of my other characters - and this mesmer build made it seem almost too easy. So, again... Thanks.

Narco wrote: Would those traits work for a G Sword build too? I tend to run G Sword / Staff and actually have good survival. Thanks! Yes. The traits are not weapon specific, they are designed to provide the best general support for a low level trying to get over that level 1-40 hump. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, I ran Sw/Sw + Staff for my lower levels, although in WvW I switched to GS + Staff. Folks will find that they will perform best in PvE if they stick to melee vs melee and ranged vs ranged, for any class. I use that formula for every single one of my toons, well except the Engineer. One weapons set is melee, the other is ranged. Ranged NPCs will kite you, if you stick to melee and you'll find a lot of problems trying to deal with multiple ranged NPCs at once, if you only use melee weapons against them. Also, the reason I do not recommend GS or Pistols, is because they're more beneficial for levels 50-80, once you've gotten a handle on Mesmer in PVE, have gotten some supporting trait points under your belt, and have found your own play style. Sw/Sw and Staff are hands down, the best weapons for leveling 1-40 for a Mesmer. Keep in mind folks, that this is recommended only for 1-40. Once you reach 40, feel free to re-trait, experiment with other weapons and find your own path to 80. There are a thousand ways to build a Mesmer, and another thousand ways to play them.

Updated the title to be easier to find.  Although old, this guide is still relevant and useful to those having problems with the lower levels on their Mesmer.

This thread should probably be over in the Guides and Tutorial section, but I am unable to move it.
