Hirelings are “da bomb”. I have eight toons, each toon has five level 3 hirelings (Blacksmith, Clothier, Woodworking, Enchanting, and Provisioning). This means 40 “packages” are mailed to me twice a day, normally netting 3-5 gold mats and plenty of purple, blue, and green mats. Additionally, Provisioning Hirelings are the only in-game source for tomatoes and oats (required for many purple tri-food recipes).
Toons need to be crafting level 32 to get level 3 hirelings. This will require a few skill points and gathering or purchasing mats. Armor/Weapon crafts can be easily leveled by gathering/purchasing high level mats (stacks can be had for 500-600 gold) crafting lvl VR 12 items your with your main crafter, and deconstructing with your alt. With only 3 points in these crafts the only raw mats you will receive will be levels 1-14 (iron ore, raw jute etc.), but you will still receive the higher level improvement mats.
Provisioning is very easy to level with low level mats and recipes, but you will need to get to level 40 and put 3 points each into “Recipe Level” and “Recipe Quality” in order to get purple level mats delivered.
Enchanting is the trick, it's hard enough to get one toon to 32 let alone all eight. Turns out the more hirelings you get the faster the process goes. Have your main enchanter craft for the alts to get each one to level 12, this allows you to get blue aspect runes delivered, and makes leveling faster. Then work on getting each individual alt to level 32, this allows you put three points into “Aspect Improvement” and three points into hireling, providing you with plenty of blue and purple, as well as the occasional gold aspect rune, and more Essence runes than you can ever use. Again “Potency” runes delivered will only be level 1-10, unless you can put some points into “Potency Improvement”. With enough points (eight) you could have multiple hirelings delivering level VR 9-14 potency runes.
