Hello,

It's been a few decades since I last played D&D.  This summer, I'd love to get back into the game.  In doing some research, I noticed they are up to the 5th edition.

Question 1:  Are my 2nd edition books obsolete?  Do I need to buy all new?  Are there (free) online resources where I can read up on the new rules?

Question 2:  Can anyone recommend any decent android phone apps or ipad apps?  I would assume in this day and age, there are bound to be some good apps for D&D players.

Question 3:  Are there any other information, resources, etc, that would help a returning player get back into the game?  Is anyone hosting a remote game?

Thanks,

Garyc

Question 1:  Are my 2nd edition books obsolete?  Do I need to buy all new?  Are there (free) online resources where I can read up on the new rules?

So if you want to play 5th Edition rules then yes they are obsolete.  5th edition does have some great conversion rules for using source books from previous editions of the game including tweaking adventures and monsters to be compatible with 5th edition rules.  Spells and magic items however a little more difficult because 5th edition has changed the way magic works in a variety of situations and items are not nearly as important as they were.  You can find a free edition of the rules here but you are going to need the core books eventually if you start playing consistently.  There is an SRD for the rules in 5th as well, but they are not as complete as using the books.  Conversion rules can be found here so you can use some of your 2e supplements.

Question 2:  Can anyone recommend any decent android phone apps or ipad apps?  I would assume in this day and age, there are bound to be some good apps for D&D players.

I LOVE the the Fight Club apps from Lions Den.  These are a really nice all in one and you can download most of the information from the SRDs them.  Reddit and Twitter have a great community that keeps the compendium files updated when new versions come out.  The player version lets you easily move through character creation without the books and the DM version can run any encounter for you very easily after you load the right monsters in it.

Question 3:  Are there any other information, resources, etc, that would help a returning player get back into the game?  Is anyone hosting a remote game?

Consider checking out Roll20 for remote games.  I have hosted there a couple times and it works great.  The Reddits for D&D are wonderful so consider checking out r/DnD/, r/DungeonsAndDragons, and r/RPG.  If you are going to run a game r/DnDnext, r/DMAcademy, and r/DNDBehindthe Screen are wonderful resources.  The links along the right side of those subreddits have amazing free community resources for playing.

An awesome site that is free, but with subscription options (cheap) for the more avid of players and DMs, is https://www.dndbeyond.com/. You can create characters there and look everything up about 5e. You can even set up campaigns and work on homebrew stuff that works with 5e. I rather like how they compiled 5e and I've played all the versions though some not as much as others. All of them have had their pros and cons for sure.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Thank you both for the information.

I will definitely check out those resources.  I went ahead and ordered some 5e books (starter set, players handbook, and monster manual).  I also created an account on Roll20; am hoping to find a group this summer.

Am really getting excited to get back into playing D&D.

I really like 5th edition. Both Bryen and Bri have already said basically everything.

The Starter Set is really good. It comes with an introductory adventure, which is a really good one. Also has something like 5 premade characters, and possibly a copy of the basic rules? I could be wrong about that part. I don't have mine near me, and haven't looked at it in nearly a year.

There are a number of people who use things from previous editions in their 5th edition games (Including Pathfinder, which is a spinoff of D&D's 3rd edition), though it takes a bit of effort to convert.

D&DBeyond is pretty good, though being forced to purchase content you already did (rebuying the PHB to be able to use the information from it, for example) is annoying, though you can buy things piece by piece for it (just want information for Dragonborn and Paladin? You can just buy those two things).

5th Edition has been amazing. A lot of older players from AD&D have come back and actually like it. You can tweak the system fairly easily to play how you want it to. The numbers don't go to astronomical heights like they did in 3rd edition (as well as Pathfinder).

Also, Roll20 is a great site. I've played all my 5th edition games on there, and is fairly easy to learn. Back when I had a decent schedule, I got a group of Gaiscioch peoples together and DMed for them. I would like to get back into it, but I don't have any guaranteed days off, which makes it hard. Anyway, good luck and hope the new D&D brings you lots of fun.

Thank you Oreo.

I think I was a little spoiled the 2 times I played D&D.  In the early 80's, my friend next door ran an excellent campaign; the endings to these campaigns involved us riding our bikes to some nearby caves - really added a new level to the gameplay.

In the early 90's, Tracy Hickman (author of Dragonlance series) hosted an AD&D campaign on campus during SciFi week.  He also gave a few lectures about storytelling, writing, and the thought process he put into creating the worlds from his books.  His AD&D campaign was epic. Sadly, that was the last D&D game I ever played.  I missed out on 3rd edition, 3.5e, and 4th edition.

I see there are some "pay to play" 5e games on Roll20; I'm not opposed to paying someone for a quality experience - especially if the money would be used to invest in future campaign materials.

Having not played in almost 30 years, I am really looking forward to D&D this summer!
