Because I can't work with every single member of our guild who needs a bit of guidance on a one-on-one basis, and because I can't know everything about every class, I've decided to post some useful resources that can help anyone who wishes to do so improve their performance. If you have any resources (class/spec blogs, theorycrafting sites, addons, and other resources) reply to this thread and I'll add them to the list!
Please bear with me as I put this list together. Formatting is pretty rough at the moment, but I'll spruce up and better organize the thread as I add more to it. I just wanted to share a few basic things right away (it's all I had time to do) before adding more in-depth resources.
All Classes
Icy Veins (Basic Guides - Start here!)
- This website features simple, easy-to-use guides that include most of what you need to know to start playing more efficiently.
Wowhead (Database)
- Wowhead is a database featuring information on pretty much everything in the game. Items, achievements, quests, spells, recipes, NPCs, etc.
- It also boasts up-to-date news that can keep you informed of what's happening with the game. Recent and upcoming changes, content, events and so on.
- In addition to all that, wowhead hosts user-created guides on just about every subject related to WoW--guides for raids, classes, quest chains, events, achievements, and more.
- This should be your first stop when you have a question about something in the game. Just search for the quest/achievement/item/whatever you want to know about and read its comments section!
DeadlyBossMods (AddOn)
- DeadlyBossMods (DBM) displays timers, buff/debuff trackers, alerts, and other information that can help you deal with boss mechanics.
- It also allows you to create your own custom timers, countdowns, and alerts if you ever feel the need to do so.
- DBM is extremely easy to use (really, you just install it and everything is already set up for you) and pretty much essential for raiding.
- Anyone raiding with us will be asked to have it installed.
TellMeWhen (AddOn)
- TellMeWhen is an AddOn that can be set up to tell you what spell/ability you should use next at any given time. It can essentially guide you through your DPS rotation, or help you track your buffs and cooldowns as a tank/healer.
- Profiles with the rotation for every single class/spec have already been made, so getting started with TellMeWhen is as simple as installing it and importing the profile corresponding to your class through its "/tmw options" command.
- You can find links for each profile below under the corresponding class section, as well as links to videos explaining some of the features of each profile.
- Refer to THIS VIDEO (at around the 6:10 mark) to learn how to import said profiles.
- Note: this is a great training tool for a beginner, and I strongly recommend using it if you're lost--but try to gradually work towards not needing it if possible because it's not perfect, and you also never know when an AddOn will stop working.
WeakAuras (AddOn)
- WeakAuras (actually called WeakAuras 2 because it's a continuation of an older project) allows you to create UI elements that track buffs/debuffs and even display timers or alerts when a given spell is used by an enemy.
- Its most basic use is to track your own buffs/debuffs and cooldowns by setting it up to display bars or timers that'll count down based on the buff's duration or the time remaining on your cooldowns.
- The purpose of this being to make that information more visible so that you won't forget to use a cooldown or reapply a buff or debuff when you're supposed to.
- Although it's not exactly rocket science, it does take some effort to learn how to use WeakAuras--so be prepared to do some homework to get the most out of this one.
- A few resources that can help you get started with WeakAuras include video guides like THIS ONE and its very own WIKI.
- Like with many other AddOns, premade profiles can be imported for WeakAuras--which means you don't have to set everything up yourself.
- Once you're familiar with WeakAura's basic functionality and the process if importing settings (see the resources linked above), check out WAGO.IO (as suggested by Celestian) to find premade trackers, timers and other settings you can import for WeakAuras.
