Windows 10 for my PC?

I currently have Windows 7 on my gaming computer.  I use this computer almost exclusively for gaming and an occasional streaming movie.  I had a icon appear on my computer saying that I can upgrade to Windows 10 for free.  It also mentions that they have the "start menu" again which is a big plus for me.  I would appreciate some guidance from those of you who understand computers and gaming re: whether I should upgrade or stay with my current system.

Thanks for your help!

My advice if you're uncertain would be to wait and see if any issues pop up once it is released, though I don't expect there will be any major problems with most games (especially as compatibility is a priority with the upgrade).  I've tinkered with a W10 developer preview and found that it was very similar to W8.1, so I will probably go ahead and upgrade.

You've got a while to think about it though, since it's not out until July 29.

I am running Windows 10 preview on my laptop.  So far so good except for the audio driver, no supported driver yet.  The full version won't be out until the fall.  My suggestion is if this is your only PC wait until the full version is ready.  Yes the start menu is back (sort of), it's not the same menu you are used to in Win7.  Win10 is kind of a compromise between 7 and 8.1   That being said I do like it very much, but not sure I am willing to run it on my main gaming machine just yet.  One thing for me that hasn't worked correctly is the updates.  It was stated that the new builds would be automatically installed as Windows Updates, but i have had to install each new build version via ISO's.  Kind of a hassle.

There is no hurry to update unless you want to get a head start on your friends/family.  Anyone with a valid Win7/Win8.1 version will get the free upgrade to Win10 when it is released officially, and by then there should be drivers available for all your components.  Just my two cents.

If you have Win 7 Pro or Win 7 Ultimate the updates are not automatic with Win 10, you'll get different versions of Win 10 depending on which version of Win 7/8/8.1 you have installed when you upgrade. Win X Home/Home Premium will result in the basic version of Win 10 (Win 10 Home I believe). While Win X Pro/Ultimate will result in Win 10 Pro. Win 10 Pro will not automatically update unless you set it to. Enterprise is a different beast entirely due to the licensing of Enterprise.

From what I hear, it will be essential to upgrade for the future of Direct X12 and PC gaming in general. Also it's a FREE upgrade.

@BearsMan You won't have to do a clean install. Win 10 will save programs and data unless you want it to do a clean install.

And Wolfie is correct DX12 will be Win 10 only and within a year or two we'll be seeing DX12 games, especially if Microsoft is not (terribly) over-exaggerating the memory efficiency of DX12.

I am only getting the notice on my PC which has Windows 7, an OS that I love.

My laptop has windows 8.1 -- that I hate, and I have not received an offer to upgrade for free on that computer.  I would update my laptop in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the advice.  I might add myself to the list but then just wait for awhile before actually scheduling the update.  The information said that you can stay on the list for up to a year.

I would echo the keep 7 for a while but update Windows 8 if you have it. Windows 8 is terrible, 10 would almost by default have to be better. From some of the reviews I have read that seems to be the case.

Windows 8 is NOT terrible.  You can ignore the metro tile stuff and it's pretty much a smoother Windows 7.

Well I used Windows 8.1 on my work laptop and it felt very well refined and it is much faster than Windows 7 so I bought Windows 8.1 for my home computer also and have been using it almost 4 months. I haven't had any issues with it. And I would assume changes between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 aren't that huge what they were between Windows 7 and Windows 8. I already opted out free upgrade so I will gladly test it out. And if I don't like it, I can always reinstall Windows 8.1 and stick to it until Windows 10 works the way I want it to work.

I don't know how well it will workout when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I wouldn't necessary do that on my computer if I still had Windows 7 on it or at least I would do clean install before upgrading it to Windows 10 so I would avoid unnecessary problems.

The most important thing in life will always be the people around you. Salud, mi familia.

I'll probably wait - everything I have is on the current 8.1.  I actually had to update Windows on the old desktop which I game on when I finally figured a new motherboard and graphics card were in order.  The mother board was like 5.5 years old.  Computer was chugging fine on Vista no matter how meh that windows version was.  Maybe next year I'll upgrade to 10, but I've only seen one thing somehow telling me about it, but nothing regularly reminding me.

Light Scribe Control Panel is a nice little program that gives you some of the Windows 7 feel in Windows 8.1.  Basically you have the pop up window for chosing programs and other things like the older versions down in the left hand corner of the bar.  So on the desktop we never go to tile land.  LOL!  I worked with the tech that helped me do this upgradew and I said even my hubby has to be comfortable with it and he has NEVER played with anything newer than the Vista I had on the desktop.  He doesn't use the laptop at all.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I'm glad you posted this thread.  I was actually logging on to post a near identical one.  I'm also torn about the "free" upgrade to Windows 10.  It's free now, but its unknown what the impact will have on gaming.   If you wait until later, it won't be free, and will cost to upgrade.  It's a conundrum.  Windows 7 is everything I need; no complaints.

They say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".  They also say every other version of Windows has had significant issues.  Win8, Vista, WinME, Win95.    Some people are saying Win8.1 is the version after Win8... I don't buy that.  I think Windows 9 -err- 10 is going to have problems!  (Win98 was better than Win95; WinXP was better than WinME; Win7 was better than Vista... I think the version AFTER Win10 will be better than Win 10.   Just a hunch :)

One thing to keep in mind is that Windows 10 will not have or support Windows Media Center (WMC).   On our home theater PC, WMC is essential, as it records all our TV shows.  I believe Microsoft wants you to buy their XBox Live and use it for your media consumption.

I did a little research on this question too.  The free offer lasts ONE YEAR after Win10 is released.  So I'm gonna wait a little on my gaming rig and see how it affects other folks first. :)  I'll probably upgrade my Windows 8 PCs right away though.  Like Fym I never really learned to love Win8 on a PC, even though I use it for work.

While I hate the metro interface besides that Win 8 was  better than Win 7 (as much as I hate saying that due to the metro interface) due to the under-the-hood improvements. Win 10 takes those improvements and then adds the UI switching that will help restore PC functionality while keeping touch device functionality.

The policy of Microsoft is getting all Windows users on platform 10, I think. So in time this is the most supported system I expect. I was never disappointed when I upgrade to 7, then to 8, every version was better than the previous one.
