I am new to the elementalist and looking for tips as far as which weapons are best, which skill slot abilities to start with first and trait lines etc.

I like fire but I know that you have need of other attunements

PTV dual dagger or PTV with staff.

If you want to go " fast with lots of damage to 80 " start with a glass cannon build. Then switch to PTV when you are 80.

PPC is basically only fire and air and a small mix of earth and water.

People generally don't party PPC builds anymore because they are going to die like crazy and they prefer the PTV support types.

I believe there are lots of discussions about elementalists in our classes section of the forums. You can also contact Jedgar in game for more of a discussion. But elementalist is unique because each weapon set is such a different play style.

What are you looking to do with it? On my elementalist I run a staff heavy water support build with caltrips for survivability in WvW. For dungeons (and I mean only AC) I run a full Zerker's DD build, focusing on fire and again using caltrips for survivability. This took awhile to not die a lot, but once I figured it out you can really pour on the dps. I would recommend looking a few youtube videos on Blast Finishers and combo fields. Elementalists have a large number of blast finishers and combo fields, so to maximize your effectiveness you should make sure you know these mechanics like the back of your hand. I currently haven't played in about a week since schoolwork has been pretty crazy, but message me on here if you would like some more information.

Like I said I am pretty new.  I want to do Wvw (never have btw).  I also want to be able to solo decent as well as do dungeons when I am high enough level.  I liked the two daggers so far.

My suggestion is to level with DD or S/D, preferably DD. Learning the ability to jump in and out of melee range without dying is a large part of playing a DD elementalist. I find that playing staff is much simpler, and thus can be picked up much quicker.

My personal preference is PTV at lvl 80 using staff and Glyphs, 30 fire, 10 air, 10 water and 20 arcane power, to increase staff aoe, give extra dps with foe below 30%, etc..   It works well with pve and dungeons, which is my primary area of play.

While leveling you can use a PPC type build just make sure to keep moving around and as usual with an ele make sure to switch elements often, no reason to wait on cool downs when you can swap to another element.  Make sure to learn some of the different combos you can create they help a ton, as an ele you can create the most combos on your own so soloing can be easier with the right combo buffs.

If you like the group play staff is nice gives you the best range and the most amount of fields for combos so your allies can create combos themselves and gives you a couple party healing skills which always helps out.

Though at the end of the day it just comes down to playing what you like, there are lots of valid builds depending on your play style and how you like to play, like if you prefer range or close combat, if you like to dodge lots or stay stationary, if you like wvw, structured pvp or pve, so on and so forth.  At the end of the day as long as your having fun playing your class that's what counts :)

Higher level chars scale down to lower zones when they enter so really you just need a char around your level to hangout with.  There are guild events daily depending on if you want group pvp or pve and you can always ask in guild chat if people wanna hangout, most players have an alt or two that they can clear zones in or the like if that's your thing too

Zoe hit it on the nose, your best bet is to experiment and find your own build.  A lot of people draw references to other games and GW2 throws all of that learnin' out the window and forces the player to start from scratch.  The most important thing to understand is that every class is equally capable of performing any role at level 80, they just have different mechanics to work with (and which make them unique to each other).  The trick is finding which class has the best basic structure for your style of play.  Then you start building from there.

You must play a class to at least level 40 to really get a good sense of whether or not its going to fit you.  If something feels ... "off", step back, take a look at what you want to do, what you're trying to do, and what tools your chosen class has to get that done.  Odds are good that you're just not understanding how to use those tools, so if you can identify what they are, you can decide if you want to try to learn to use them or scrap the class for another class that has tools that you're more comfortable with.  If you do this and get to 60-ish and still are having problems, then you're on the wrong class and it will just never work right for you, so think about something else.  Maybe you'll get a flash of insight later, once you've gained more experience and be able to come back to it and figure out how to make it work for you.  (have had that happen to myself)

All of the builds that you will find posted are for level 80.  They're most likely not going to workout well as a leveling guide.  For leveling, its not really about surviving and grinding out XP, its about learning if and how you can make the class work for you and what your best end-game build will be.

Class building in GW2 is complicated, but actually quite simple once you realize how classes are designed.

One exception to the above, is that if you are a Glass Cannon lover, do not try to level with one unless you are a very exceptional player and a masochist in love with frustration and pain.  Its possible, but its painful.  If you're a good player you can switch to a GC type build around level 60-70 and start ironing it out then.

I personally run a strange build for an ele and it seems to work for both pve and wvw.  I am a staff ele and run power, vit, and condition!  I also have superior runes of the dolyak on all my gear.  Sounds weird but it gives me more to do.  I switch between my elements a ton and it keeps me on my toes which I love.  In my opinion,  because of all the varieties that an ele can run it makes it the most fun for me out of any other class I have played.  Learning how your personal preferences go along with any class is how you find the best build for you.  Hope this helps some.  :-)

Hi all,

I just started over with an ele alt and appreciate all th advice. I have two questions Id like to ask.

1 Some of you mentioned that the "glass cannon" build isn't really viable in WVW anymore. Is there a way I can still be a major damage dealer vs support? The reason Im asking is I currently have a support guardian main and want to mix it up.

2 How are the elementals as pets? Are they of limited use or very good at helping you clear PVE content?

I recognize that with these questions necro might better suit my style. I just played necro way too much in GW 1 and want a change of pace.

"Glass cannon" is still viable in WvW, people just get lazy and don't learn how to stay out of red circles or dodge, which is why they feel that they need PTV.   I also believe that wearing PTV leads to learning bad play habits, because players are more prone to ignore smart playing and ignore strategy and take risks that they should not be taking.

Lots of people will complain that if you don't wear PTV, then you're nothing more than a "rally bot" in a zerg, but TBH... none of my characters are "PTV" and I'm often one of the last to die or the one rezzing the PTV geared players.

Well, my Guardian, Sekkerhund, is probably the closest I have to a "PTV" toon, he's a mix of PTV and Clerics and is traited for healer support, but I find that he doesn't live any longer than any of my other characters.  He might even die faster because I get more cocky and careless with him and don't play as smartly as I would with one of my other DPS toons.

Play whatever you can learn to play and be able to play to the best of your ability.  Most of all, play whatever you will have the most fun with.

Now, for leveling... you will need to experiment to find your own style.  Some find Daggers to work for them, others find Staff to work for them.  Don't worry about stats on your gear while leveling, because you will out level your gear quickly enough and the stats you will find available are not always going to be what you want.  So you are left with a choice of under-leveled gear with the stats you want, or level appropriate gear without the stats you want.

(hint: always choose level appropriate, try to upgrade every 5-7 levels if you can, Masterwork (green) preferred, purchase from Trading Post.)

So final question for all the ele experts here - how hard is elementalist to pick up and learn the ropes? I recognize it has a high skill ceiling but I'm hoping I won't be banging my head against my monitor as I level. But I do want a little more challenge than my guardian.

For the purposes of teaching, I'm going to talk bluntly. What I'm about to tell you is simply an overview without going into exact detail. For more information beyond this, go to http://wiki.guildwars2.com

A lot of people here are giving way too much information on endgame stuff when we're only talking about people just starting out as Elementalist.

First off, There is no, "Best weapon, best class, best anything." I actually hate that word when it refers to classes. There is no best. Do not look for best. Look for what suits your playing style.

Since the first post asked about weapons, allow me to go over the different weapons available to the Elementalist.

Staff: Focuses on long range offensive and supportive spells, both single-target and AoE. If you are just starting out learning how to play the Elementalist, this is the weapon you wanna use until you're more comfortable with your class. This is the easiest weapon to learn and master as it will give you the chance to play a variety of roles, and it will not require the amount of mobility the other weapons will require.

Scepter: Focuses on mid-range offensive condition spells. Since it is a 1h weapon, it can be paired with Dagger or Focus. It cannot be paired with another scepter. It also has a bit of AoE options as well.

Focus: Focuses on support spells (such as auras, Crowd Control, and other defensive abilities) It can be paired with either the scepter or the dagger, but only as an off-hand weapon. You cannot equip two foci.

Dagger: Focuses on close range heavy offensive and hard-hitting conditions. It will be the most difficult to master as the spells of daggers are only effective at close range. If you feel that you are confidant at being a mobile caster, go with it. Daggers can be paired with a second dagger or a focus. It can also go on the offhand for a scepter.

I got some tips too.

LEARN HOW TO USE COMBO EFFECTS: Combos are an Elementalist's bread and butter. The many combos can heal, give defensive support, give you buffs, and cause conditions to ravage your enemy. Look at your skills. Some will show combo area, others will show combo finisher. I'll let you figure out the rest as far as that is concerned.

CHANGE ELEMENTS OFTEN: Assuming your traits don't have it to where there are any added effects when you go to switch attunements, you have an array of 20 weapon spells at any given time. If you only stay in one element then you'll be at the mercy of your cooldown timers, and you won't be using your spells to their fullest potential. So switch it up. You're not a Fire Mage. Or Water. Or Air. Or Rock. You're an ELEMENTALIST. You're supposed to use ALL of them!

Not to mention that what could be a combo area in one attunement could very well be a combo finisher in another.

STAY MOBILE: Most of your spells can be cast while moving. Remember that you're wearing cloth so you wanna minimize as much damage as possible. By staying mobile, you can almost eliminate damage completely by simply not getting hit.

Everything else, I'll leave to you to learn on your own or let the other family members tell you.
