No Trans Fat "Homemade Microwave Popcorn"

The whole "trans fat" issue in our diets has been in the media lately.  We Americans like convenience.  One of those conveniences is in our snack foods where we tend to get way, way too much trans fat.  What so many forget, especially younger folks that did not grow up with popping their own corn without benefit of a microwave, you don't need pre-packaged "microwave popcorn."  Below  is the complete list of ingredients you need to make your own microwave popcorn, for some of you this will come as a big surprise.

Ingredients: Popping Corn

Paper "lunch" sack (color doesn't matter, just depends on if your store sells brown, white or both)

That's it! The popping Corn you can buy anywhere you buy your groceries. It comes in bags, jars. Pick whichever brand you like.  By paper sack I mean the "lunch" sack size that you used to take your lunches to school in ... brown plain paper lunch sacks.  You can buy these at groceries stores, too, still.

All you need to do is measure about 3 tablespoons of popping corn kernels into one paper sack. Roll the top closed a few turns.  Stand it up in your microwave and cook for about 1 minute 35 seconds.  The time could vary according to the wattage of your microwave but this time is a good beginning point. Just make sure that whatever time you start with listen for the popping, if it stops popping it's done.  Stop microwaving when the popping stops.  You will find that this not only makes "microwave popcorn" less expensively but it's healthier for you, too, depending on what you do (or don't) put on your popcorn after it's done.

She's right on the cost.  Cheaper to buy it and pop it this way.  Then you can add what you want and really know what you put on it if you don't go for overly processed stuff.

BTW, real butter doesn't have transfats, but most imitation stuff to replace butter to supposedly save on calories do have trans fats or other wonky stuff.  There should not be a lot of weird scientific names of things on your product label.

We like a little butter and parmasan cheese on our popcorn.  Hubby likes this a treat way more than I do.  Never was a huge popcorn fan.

Herbs and spices for different flavors are great and healthy, too.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

No oil or anything to pop huh? This is AMAZING!!!

I found out I have dairy allergies and do not own a "pot" that can cook up popcorn.  You are a lifesaver! :)

*hugs*

The FDA has started a national program to ban trans fats. If it maintains support, you should start seeing it gain ground quickly. I think right now the ban only applies to certain processed foods. It's gonna be a good idea to start figuring out how to make your favorite snacks if companies stop making them due to the ban. Of course, they'll likely just switch to formulas without trans fats anyway.

There's just something about movie theater popcorn that tastes so good it's one of those few snacks I've chosen not to replace with healthier alternatives.

I have both an air popcorn popper and a classic movie style popper. I LOVE popcorn. any left over I have from my poppers (which is rare) I keep in an air tight container and have it in the morning in a bowl with some milk, skim or soy, for a breakfast cereal

*Edited cuz I am a dweeb and forgot something ... lol*

Remember that this method is every bit as "portable" as the store bought microwave bags, too. Just make you up a few, fold them all the way down and put them in a baggie, like a "ziplock type", or container to take to work or keep in a backpack or purse.

Additional thought not limited to "popcorn":  In response to the whole question of "ingredients" put into our foods, especially here in the good ol' USA I gave up trying to figure out what would be a "good" or "okay" ingredient on that long list of ingredients in store bought foods.  It saves me a lot of time using my own system when I am label reading.  If I can't look at an ingredient and figure out what the heck it is then I assume my body can't figure out what to do with it and I don't buy the product.  I know, it sounds simplistic but since I am the type of person that does read labels, especially when it's a product I do not normally buy, it's just easiest for me to think this way about "ingredients" than try to remember what all of the freaking scientific names are for things.

For those that are a novice at label reading one tip I taught my kids as they were growing up still applies today.  Ingredients are listed by quantity going from most to least.  Of course, just because salt is last on the list doesn't mean that a particular product is "low salt" or doesn't contain too much. Where I really found this to be a very enlightening tidbit of knowledge was in selecting items like pet foods when you are trying to decide what is better for your pets.

For stove top popcorn:

1.Get a pot out with a lid. It can be big or small, it doesn't matter. Have a bowl ready that has at least the same volume as the pot.

2. Coat the entire bottom of the pot with oil of your choice--olive, canola, coconut, whatever you like. Heat it up--on an electric stove, use medium heat. On a gas stove, use high heat. I throw a couple kernals of popcorn, and they'll pop when the oil is hot enough.

3. Add popcorn to fill the bottom of the pot 1 layer thick. Put the lid on, and pop until the kernals stop popping, shaking the pot frequently.

4. Pour into bowl, add salt and/or butter to taste, enjoy!

Nothing beats a whirly pop on the stovetop using bacon grease in place of oil. yeah, you heard me, bacon. Try it and you won't care that it isn't healthy :)

My recipe is easy.

     1) Go to local Theatre

     2) Order large popcorn so you get free refills

     3) Eat so much you are sick by end of movie.

     4) get your free refill after movie even though the site of popcorn at this time makes you want to barf

     5) when you get home, leave bucket of popcorn on counter because all you want to do is lay down on couch and fall asleep.

     6) wake up two hours later and drink 2 gallons of water because you are so dehydrated from 70g of salt

     7) go back to couch and sleep till morning

     8) have cold greasy popcorn for breakfast that somehow seems 20 degrees colder than room temperature and makes your mouth feel like you sucked on a candle but you eat it anyway because you are now craving salt again.

     9) tell kids that "no you cant take the leftover popcorn to school for a snack because the crap is so bad for you"

    10) throw 3/4 bucket of popcorn away two days later because it is stinking up the house.

This is such a timely post for me.  At my last doctor's appointment I was told my bad cholesterol had risen dramatically since the last visit--I've never had cholesterol problems before.  I started checking everything in the pantry for Saturated and Trans fats.  The microwaveable popcorn was one of the highest.  My heart sank.

I bought a special bowl to pop the corn in the microwave and it works great, but I LOVE the paper bag idea.  The kids can make their own and put whatever they want on it, and it's perfect for portion control.

Thanks so much for posting!

Wow I love popcorn, but I simply just want the white cheddar popcorn only found in those holiday popcorn tins.  This is great because I need to lose wait and need a healthy snack option as I start a new diet with my wife.  Also my triglycerides have been high so I have been trying to cut out breads and eat more omega 3, however cutting out transfers will be amazing as well.  Will have to invest in some actual butter, melt it and bottle it for the butter flavoring option for me and the kids.  Thanks a bunch.
