Well I came from 0 exercise and I'm doing pretty good. you just need to push play as he says. Take it slow and you will see improvement. the first week and a half are the hardest. I'm still hurting but I'm able to finish out each hour now. Unfortuantely its taking me away from my play time. but I can use the break.

Did P90X and then the Beach Body Insanity right after I finished that one...pretty crazy stuff. You definitely need to be in some kind of shape before trying Insanity, but it's a heck of a work out. Kind of got bored with the routines now though and just do my own weight and cardio exercise kinda as I feel like it. For someone looking to have some kind of structured workout though that WILL give you results if you follow it, P90X is a solid option. I definitely had to take a lot of breaks and such when I started, and couldn't make it through the full hour on a couple of the more difficult workouts, but it's a good ache the next day!

Those workouts are intense, and make me hurt to much. Not just the muscles but my joints and such. I ride a bike and or walk/jog with an audio book. I get a good hour in and also get my escape with a good book. I am trying to combine things I will do as lifestyle changes that I can stick with. I struggle with my weight as I know many do. So far so good with audio book work out regiment. I know its not near as intense and body changing as P90X or insanity and other super intense workouts. And I by no means am trying to take away how awesome it is that you do crazy intense workouts. Thats why there are the thin and healthy people and then their is me who struggles to work around an ancient knee injury, and likes to eat way to much for the activity level I enjoy. Video games are so seditary and fun. Dang you ArenaNet for making such a good game.

I have to watch what I do with my MS. I try to be more active, but I have to admit I am quite the couch potato. ::chuckles:: Due to issues with my arms, I have special exercises for them and I do walk. I have a treadmill so no excuse other than laziness on my part for not using it when I can't get out during the winter. Who wants to go for a walk outside with me right now? It's a whopping 2 degrees farenheit. Heh. On a good note I lost 15 pounds last year being a slug, gained NONE back during the holidays, and managed to stay stable for three months. So I do as I can and we'll see if I can kick start into a loss again. I seem to do a lot better health wise in spring and summer. I'd probably die of shock if I got back to the weight I was in the military.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

One nice thing that I feel like I should have thought of years ago was to buy one of those small, lightweight and quiet treadmills that fold up all small. I keep it in my living room and just pull it out whenever I bring up my DVR to watch my recorded shows, so i'll just get on the treadmill and watch a show or two for 45 - 90 minutes. I start of with a casual walk to warm up then do a bit of a jog and then come back down and cool off, so it's real easy and I don't even feel/think about it because i'm engaged in whatever show i'm watching. It's nice cause it tends to be like 4-5 nights a week that shows come on I watch, so I get a solid cardio workout enough times a week without feeling like I go overboard, then just do some weights on a weekend day or whenever I feel like it, also usually sitting in a small open chair or standing in front of my TV watching football on Sunday or something. Makes it easy for a massive slacker like me to be sure I get in at least some kind of excersize, even if it isn't perfectly ideal, without having to think about it too much or force myself to do it or spend the few precious hours of free time I have hurting myself instead of getting to be a bum and catch up on my TV. :-D

I tried the 'casual' exersice thing. like i took a half hour walk during lunch, then worked my way back up to running for about 20 min after work. but it wasn't really doing anything i wasn't gaining or loosing any weight. Thats why I'm going a bit more extreme to kick my body into a higher gear. I sit at a computer at work and then sit at my computer at home which definitely doesn't make for a healthy lifestyle.

I think in general this is a good subject to talk about. It reminds me to stay on my walking and biking routines. The weather in southern AZ is warming up and I am getting the itch again. I need to find a better solution for the 2months of cold here. Treadmill maybe.

I've heard P90x is intense and a challenge, good for you. :) I actually use the P90x yoga DVD for my weekly yoga. I think the most important thing with exercise is to find what you actually like to do because you're more likely to stick to it. For me, that's running and yoga, and now I'm paying for a trainer to push me through the weights I don't like doing. And if you're trying to lose weight, you really need to know what you're eating, too, either by doing something like weight watchers or counting calories. I'm not sure how you make sure that you don't eat the extra calories you exercise without that.

Anybody know the best way to purchase P90X? It's on TV all the time but it's so expensive. I have the regular P90 from years ago so my wife keeps telling me to do that one, but P90X has an X in the name!!! MUST HAVE

Yeah, was just doing some checking on the pricing and even Amazon doesn't save you much on it, though they do offer all the stuff in varying packages or separate like the official website. P90X Kit Comparison on official site. To check on Amazon just do a search for P90X. Hope this helps those looking for more details, plus the cost alternatives. Wanted to add that resistance bands are a GREAT thing even for this crazy chick with MS. I got some good ones from my Physical Therapist. One works well for stretching and another is a lot stiffer for strengthening. I just have to be more diligent in using what I have. =) I have a lot of issues with my left arm and it causes a lot of tension and fatigue in the upper body, so I really need to keep on top of things so I don't make it worse by not doing enough or doing the wrong things or doing too much. Interesting line to walk and I'm such a stinkin' couch potato! It's that bookwormy, computer nerd combo - killer on the healthy moving side.

A few years ago, I bought P90X, and in the first 60 days lost about 45 lbs. Unfortunately, i'm not a young whipper snapper, and my body couldn't keep up with all the stress. What I miss most about P90X is the recipe guide, which has gone missing. I loved some of the recipes in it.. like the breakfast eggwhite omlet, and the turkey burgers. I'd like to give P90x a 2nd try (at a slower pace this time), but need to find my recipe guide first.

I've been doing couch to 5k to increase my endurance before I get my butt kicked by P90X. It's been a while since I've done any major exercise other than hiking and it shows. To answer Tagus, I've found it cheaper on Craigslist and Ebay, but I went the safe route and bought it from beachbody.com. I have the chin-up bar and resistance straps from an earlier purchase from Wayfair.com. I have a friend thats been on P90X for 2.5 months now and he's been nothing but encouragement for me. He's looking great, better attitude and that is what I'm looking for. He says at first you'll be wishing that you never spoke the word P90X, but after a couple of weeks it gets better. 90 days for a better you! Lets go peeps, we can do this!

Paja, I got couch to 5K written down. But have figured out I can't even walk as fast and as far as I used to so having to ramp up a bit slower, but at least my legs work! Of course, this past week with the left arm feeling way out of whack no matter what I tried, it actually made moving around odd because the upper body would not move right. I remember my last day of work before I wound up on disability that became permanent; I felt like I was walking like the hunchback of Notre Dame. Usually MS hits the legs first, not the arms/hands though that is just based on statistics for a very random thing. It all depends on where the damage shows up in the brain.

I started week 6 yesterday. I still haven't seen any changes yet, still same weight and my waist hasn't changed, but I am getting stronger as I'm able to actually do sit ups and lifting more weight. I have read on the beachbody site that you really shouldn't expect much change till nearly day 60. so I got another couple weeks. Paja, definitely find someone to do the program with you. I have 2 people i'm doing it with and if it weren't for them I would have stopped a while ago. during the few days that i had to do it by myself its to easy to halfass the workouts. Having those other people around makes a big difference

Bri, try modifying the routine to your ability and don't push too hard at first. Being determined is the key to any successful venture. I've definitely modified the plan to help me along. @Maegor: very wise idea to exercise with friends. It definitely helps, but if P90X is anything like 2.5 months of intensive Army basic training, I'll be able to handle it. It's all about mindset and knowing how far you can push yourself. I'll definitely be baby stepping through this for the next few months. It's imperative that I succeed in mastering this exercise routine. *starts putting up post-it notes with motivational quotes everywhere*

Yeah, definitely working into it because not only am I a couch potato, but have a disability. Anyway, I can walk a mile at 2.8 mph without dying. LOL! I'm the slow, but steady turtle. =) Actually the not dying part isn't the problem with breathing, it's with actually getting the muscles back in shape.

Almost done, got only a week and a half left. Haven't lost any weight unfortunately but I am much stronger than when i started. When i started I could barely do 50 total of the ab exercises, now I'm able to do close to 300. I guess i've just added more muscle mass than weight loss. I was hoping to see that scale drop though.

Congrats on almost being all the way through it. :) It's too bad you didn't lose weight like you wanted, but you probably did lose fat and gain muscle and just naturally ate more to compensate for the exercise calories burned. I was just reading an article about people training for a marathon that often don't lose weight, or even gain weight, for similar reasons.

I tried this for about a week a while back. I will say Tony is a GREAT motivator. So much so, that I strained too hard. My advice to those starting out is to do about half of what he asks you to do until you're sure of your capability. For me, a couch potato for quite some time, to jump in, full of inspiration and push, push, push, was just asking for failure. At 51 I was straining every fiber of my being to push out just one more rep. The bone in my neck that's out of place, and usually not an issue, didn't like that. So on day one - my whole upper body was sore as expected but I also couldn't turn my head, or laydown with out bones in my neck grinding.. painfully. Push through it old man, I said, and on day two I did legs. I used to have very strong legs and they probably are still my strongest muscle group. I pushed through the pain in my neck, pushed until my heart monitor told me to take it easy several times. Well, I didn't die of a heart attack, and I don't think I had a stroke but I couldn't walk right for two weeks. My body just can't recuperate that fast, at least not right out of the gate. The moral of the story I guess is, start slow, get a feel for what you can do. I'll be starting again after I drop about 10 more pounds. I've given up on the 50 and ripped dream. I just want be around long enough for my kids to remember me and hopefully remember me as a strong and caring father who they loved.

I've had the total gym xls for 45 days now and like it more each week. I have added it twice a week to my walking/biking routine inbetween, getting 5 works outs a week fairly consitantly now. It feels great, though I still have yet to lose much weight, but I am much stronger and mobile. I'm guessing it may take longer to recoup lost muscle, losing inches but not weight. Frustrating in a way as a scale is a measurable way of seeing progress. But fitting into my clothes better is satisfying as well I suppose. Everyone keep up the good work.

I'm currently on day 54 of p90x. It's a beast of a workout, but keeping up pretty well. Over the past year I've lost 30lbs! Once done with this I'll be taking a week break and going back through p90x for a second round. After that I'll give p90x 2 a shot!

Hi there again. Haven't been doing this, but have been trying to do whatever I can when my MS is not messing me up. GOOD NEWS! I'm down another pant size. Just tried them on since what I was wearing felt way too loose at church today. Sure enough all my pants except one pair fit pretty good. The one pair that is tight will be my pants that let me know when I've shrunk closer to the next size. They are my skinny version of the size. ;) My husband, now that he knows his issues are definitely not his heart, has worked further on diet and exercise in his own way and has lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks. He's a big boy and I keep telling him he can get smaller than he thinks he can. Just cuz it's been a couple decades doesn't mean it isn't possible. ;) Yeah, so if this woman with MS and a man in his 60's can loose weight by eating right and trying to at least move more wind up losing weight, you can, too! Yes, I'm egging you on!!!!!

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Briseadh, Grats to you and your hubby. I'm still trying to find something that works for me. I have chronic back pain, and it limits what options I have. I do have a recumbent bike and a total gym. Both allow my back to be in a fixed position, while my arms/legs can get a workout. I just need motivation. Maybe if my computer was powered by the recumbent bike.. I would be forced to pedal to play GW2. :)

I do the new workout created by the lady in Florida, Prancercise!  LOL really do a google if you haven't seen the video.

With my weight I found P90X a little too much for me right now.  I've started keeping a food journal so I can see what and where I need to change my habbits.  I've also taken up cycling which I really enjoy.  Just hit my first personal goal of doing a 20 mile ride.  Now I'm working towards 30 miles.

I have P90X and it was a bit much at my age. They also have the single disk version that is probably good to start with. I'd say do that for about 30 days. Can do the same with P90X disks as well and not pay attention to the schedule just to get things loosened up and a few unused muscles built up a bit. I tried on Day 1 and  did the entire hour but only did what I could and didn't push myself. I hurt too much the next few days to do it again but I still recommend P90X. If you don't do P90X then walking/bicycle and stretches would be good to start with and then get into P90X.

The old military method is good too for some weight loss  and some fitness. It is an eat anything you want diet. The important part is small (not tiny, not heaping) portions. Important to have 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at the same time every day. No snacks and few to no sodas or other sweet drinks. Exercise 3 times a week until heart rate is elevated and maintain for set amount of time. The easiest is to walk at a brisk (not speed walking and not a slow normal walk) pace for 45 minutes. The problem I have seen people do with exercise is they may ride a bike but barely faster than a walk. The key is getting heart rate up and keeping it up the entire duration without stopping. The idea behind the diet is to have normal portions (normal for what a body needs and not for what you crave) at set times so it will start setting the metabolism. The old military method isn't fast and isn't going to make you lean and buffed. But it will bring the weight down to what your body thinks is the right weight. The more overweight the longer it will take.

Personally I am overweight and out of shape. I know what needs to be done and how but hate exercise in exercise form. As I've gotten older I hate sweating and hate the pain in the joints. I will do physical work until I'm a sweaty mess and 2 minutes from a heart attack and it doesn't bother me. But I find exercise boring and other things more important. I know that the important thing is to find exercise you like and that you find the drive to do it and keep it up. The end results can be worth it. I would recommend the P90X to anyone as it will ultimately get you the results you want. If you are really out of shape like me then start it without using its schedule. After you have gained your breath and muscles needed then start at the beginning using the schedule and see it through until the end of the schedule. Push yourself hard past the couch frame of mind but never so hard to put yourself in the hospital. Yes, easier said than done.

As an update on me.  I'm still at walking and stretching when it isn't 90 degrees.  Of course right now it is 48 for the first time in weeks and my body is confused.  LOL!

I'm down at least 10 to 15 pounds since I last posted in February.  Not bad for a disabled woman.  Hardest part is exercise that gets the heartrate up, but I at least get myself moving.  Actually love it when the left arm lets me get some housework done instead of feeling like the one handed paper hanger.

My hubby, once his scare about some heart congestion was proven false and the issue that he was too heavy, got right into working on that with diet and he is down a definite 25 pounds since the beginning of May.  His exercise is cleaning dorms at the local college and summer time they get the overhaul, plus lawn mowing and his summer projects.  He'll get on the treadmill during the winter as long as he has something to watch on TV.

Anyway, if we can do it, you younger, healthier peeps sure can!  I still have 30 pounds to go and it might take me two years, but I'm not stopping.  Slow but sure wins the race.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D
