Update On Me

By: TernieLaBiscuit

Yes, I know. You're all wondering "Where did Khaleesi go?!" Well, I'm here to tell you, it's been the busiest 6 or so weeks of my life. Most of my regular guild friends know that I went on a cruise at the beginning of this year, and it was fantastic! There's nothing more exhilarating than jumping into the ocean when you know it's -13 degrees at home.

Let's talk about the fun stuff before the bad stuff. A group of about 15 people all went on a cruise to the Bahamas together. We've been planning this since about March 2015, so we were ready! The group we traveled with consisted of my husband and myself, paired along with two other couples, whom we're close friends with. We got a condo in Orlando and spent a few days in town before the cruise. We played mini golf (something we all like to do) and my husband bounced his putter into the nearby lake. He was excited, went to throw it in a celebratory fashion, and the rubber handle hit ground, bounced over a rope net, and dropped straight into the lake next to the course. After mini golf, we ate at the Sizzler. Yeah, not exciting for some people, but we haven't had a Sizzler in Kansas City for over a decade. And, they had all you can eat guacamole, which was fantastic for me, because I could live off guacamole. We swam, sat in a hot tub, went down water slides, cooked our own dinner in the condo (shopping for groceries at a Publix, which was the first time for me. We don't have Publix in the midwest), and my husband and I went to Medieval Times. I had never been and wanted to go. It was entertaining, and the food wasn't bad, either.

After a few days in Orlando, we got on a cruise ship, porting out of Port Canaveral, and headed out to the Bahamas. Our first stop was Freeport, where we rented a taxi van, and got a tour of the island, with stops included. We visited the beach. The sand was like powder, didn't stick to my feet. We chased a crab for about 10 minutes before he buried himself in the sand. Then we went on to the Freeport Shopping District, where we visited the Duty Free shops, and bought the best rum I've ever had. I need more of it, actually. At $12 a bottle, I wish I could have purchased a case. Ole Nassau rum is really, really good. I also paid a lady $5 to hold an iguana, which ended up on my head. He was very sweet, had a smile on his face, and liked to play. We were also shown the mansion of the guy who owns all the Burger Kings on Freeport island, and it's a pretty huge place.

Our next day was in Nassau, which was very much a place of commerce, and haggling. While I liked going there, it was very busy all over the place. We went to all the shops and got free charms, tried the Tortuga Rum cake (which I thought was overrated), visited a Pirate Museum, ate conch chowder at a restaurant in town. We also took a taxi to Atlantis. It was very windy that day, and umbrellas from the outdoor tables flew out of them and almost impaled people. I saw them wiggling right before, and may have saved a few lives by telling people to run off the pier side. I really thought I might see someone get impaled by a giant umbrella. Anyway, Atlantis. It was huge, the interior was beautifully decorated, and didn't feel cheap. On our way back to the ship, we stopped in the market and haggled for some souvenirs. We got t-shirts for ourselves and the kids, bought each of the kids a souvenir special to them, and I bought a conch shell from a guy on the pier.

Our last day on the ship, the day before disembarkment, was our friend's birthday. We bought him the birthday decoration room, cake included. We took the cake and a few bottles of rum to the comedy club. A little backstory here, we had been to this comedy club every night of the cruise because the main headline guy was hilarious. So, when we were down there, he'd finished his first set, walked by us, and my husband ran to him and was like, "Hey, it's our friends birthday. You wanna hang out and have some cake?" And he was like "Yeah, sure!" So the comic (his name is Macio) sat in our group (we were taking up 3 pits anyway) and we gave him birthday cake and rum. He signed our friends birthday sign, and gave us all a shoutout at the beginning of his set. Then, at the end, he called our friend up on stage, asked if it was anyone else's birthday, and we all sang happy birthday to a handful of people.

Disembarkment day, we departed the boat, spent the morning on Cocoa Beach. It was only 65 degrees, and the locals thought we were crazy, but we jumped in the ocean anyway. It was warm, and the waves were constant. After a few hours on the ocean, we ate lunch then went to Gatorland, which I hadn't been to since I was a kid. We had a good time there, too. After a quick bite to eat for dinner, we headed home on the long 19 hour drive back. We had put the Star Wars movies on our Surface Pro before leaving town, and watched all 6 movies on the way home. All in all, great trip, great memories, and we've already booked for another cruise next year.

Before leaving town, we had 2 unexpected funerals. My kids uncle on their father's side, who was 28 years old, passed away 2 days before Christmas because of a coronary failure due to untreated hypertension. The second funeral was my husband's best friends father-in-law, whom was diagnosed with lung cancer in November, passed away shortly before we were leaving town.

After our week of fun in Orlando/Bahamas, I was sick with a really bad dry cough for 2 weeks and threw my back out. That wasn't fun. I've been to the chiropractor 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and had a 90 minute massage. I'm starting to feel a little better, but I've been tired since the trip.

We've been fundraising for the girls trip to Savannah in May. They've recently been asking for pledges for their walk-a-thon, so in the off chance you're interested, let me know. :)

My oldest daughter has been working hard trying to learn new instruments, and wants to play quad drums next year during marching band. I guess we'll see how that goes. My son has been driving me crazy with not completing work in school. He managed to barely scrape by and pass last semester, but has been putting in a bit more effort this semester. My youngest daughter, who managed to get onto the Varsity Swimming team her freshman year, will be swimming in her final meet this weekend.

Anyway, that's been my life in a nutshell over the past month or so. I hope to get back into ESO very, very soon. :)
